Columbia University in the City of New York is seeking a Staff Writer/Editor.

***GRANT FUNDED POSITION***

Columbia Journalism Review, now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary year, is the world's oldest and best-known journal dedicated to the performance of the press. In addition to our bimonthly magazine, we maintain a robust website (www.cjr.org) providing timely press criticism, media reporting, and content that helps journalists improve at their work.

Campaign Desk, the rubric under which cjr.org presents its coverage of politics and policy, has kept an eye on the political press since 2004. Our work has won awards and been widely cited by all forms of media, including major websites, newspapers, magazines, television, and radio. Our writers are invited experts and guests on campaign coverage issues on all media platforms.

For the 2012 election, we will be launching the Campaign Desk States Project, a special initiative to watchdog the press in nine key states. Our emphasis will be on two areas of focus: 1) policing the political discourse as it plays out in the media, including coverage that fails to challenge or plays into political fear mongering, rhetorical distortion and manipulation, missing context, errors of fact, intellectual dishonesty, and so on; and 2) critiques of how the influence of political money?lobbying, campaign advertising, special-interest organizing?is covered.

This position will play a key role in the States Project, alongside an existing Campaign Desk staff writer and CJR's deputy editor. It is a three-day a week part time position, whose status is dependent on continued funding following the first year of the States Project.

Responsibilities include identifying and recruiting qualified contract writers to cover our key target states--Iowa, New Hampshire, Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio. Once the roster of writers is assembled, this position will be responsible for ensuring they write regularly on the most important, timely, and interesting aspects of the campaign in their respective states. The States Project staff writers, in addition to writing on the 2012 campaign as their other duties allow, will be the primary editors of this coverage, working with writers and their words to ensure they meet all of CJR's standards of quality and intellectual rigor.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
